Happy 2012

Had a few drinks over the day, while I am going to finish a few more then start my water regime. :kat: and I went out for dinner and are way more full than we should be. I should make it to midnight, as I have World 7 and 8 to finish on Super Mario 3D Land. :smurfy:

Oh yeah, continuing my Vincent Price movie session from earlier today. {it and the Pendulum is the current flavor.

Have a sweet New Year! New job and some more regular dog walks are on my resolution radar. I prepare to go chill in the basement for the 2012 Drop (EST). :D

SOPA and DNS Change

I'm about out for the day, but it should be no shock that I think SOPA is a giant crock of idiotic bullshit. It turns out GoDaddy supports this, so I may join the party to switch to a new DNS provider.

The shameful clickbait sex ads were bad enough, but the ass licking support of such a counter-logical act of Gov't is the last straw. Considering I recently renewed, this is kind of a PITA, but not as much as the blatant idiocy they support.

Reddit Dood:

Quote

"I just finished writing GoDaddy a letter stating why I'm moving my small businesses 51 domains away from them, as well as my personal domains," wrote redditor selfprodigy on Thursday morning. He proposed that December 29 be declared "move your domain day," with GoDaddy customers switching to competing registrars. The post has accumulated more than 1,500 comments, most of them supporting the idea.

Forsaken World MMO

Well it seems we got some players busting this game out lately. To be perfectly honest I have even started to play a little here and there. It's a pretty fun game, free to play which is nice. So with that said, we need to start getting people to roll up on TeamSpeak and bust out some action with us.

  • The game has a good range of chars to choose from
  • PVP Servers to make it more fun (Thats what we play)
  • Quest based leveling (Not a big fan of it, I like to grind off mobs)
  • Very Very Very team based which is pretty cool
  • Pet system which is rad. I love pet systems!
  • And yea pretty str8 forward, and I would call it a free World of War Craft

Diablo 1

If you go to run Diablo 1 on a Windows 7 install, you'll likely see some miss-drawn colors. This guide can help with that.

Shorthand of it is:
Grab the 1.09 Patch from Blizzard
Make a batch file to load the game.
- this batch will kill explorer.exe while you play. While I don't know why, this fixes the color issue.

Here is the contents of the DiabloFix.zip from the link. You can paste the below into a Text doc, save it as a .bat in your game install folder.
@echo off
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
diablo.exe
pause
start explorer.exe
exit

Oh yeah, you also cannot register Diablo 1 on battlenet, as it doesn't have any CD Keys.

Super Mario 3D Land

As we joined the 3DS club this holiday, SM3L came home with us. This game shows the interesting use of 3D, while also allowing you to turn off 3D mode. I am mostly fond of the vertical levels, but all around the 3D use for level design is pretty impressive. Truth be told, seeing this game on demo in store, is what encouraged me to get a 3DS.

Game play wise, your base Mario platforming mechanics are intact. There are a few more new Suit / Power Up items, but nothing radically different enough from previous games for me to spoil it any more than that. There are are some mechanisms to make the levels more accessible and they are:
  • Default state is 'Big' Mario. You'll shrink if you get hit, unless you have a powerup. Then you would revert to Big.
  • Extra Lives are silly easy to acquire. This goes along with:
  • If you die multiple times on a level (3x to 5x), a Gold block with a Leaf on it will appear by the Start or Checkpoint. This will give you a Tanooki outfit and Star Power for the duration of the level.
  • Hit the top of the Flagpole @ the end of a level, get a 1 Up.
  • Jump on 5 enemies without hitting the ground (or via Star Power), get a 1 Up. This will continue with more 1 Ups if you continue 6+ on your jumps or star mode.
  • Levels are 'bite-sized' imo. I saw this with Mario 3 in mind. I'd say they are about half the length of those levels, on average.
  • World Maps tend to have 5 Levels and the Castle. Each World also has an optional level, unlocked via the Gold Coins you collected from the other levels.

Per the system time logging, I completed the 1st play through in about 7 hours. Since you collect Gold Coins in each level to proceed into Castles and such, replaying levels works out pretty well.

As common with the newer games, you'll find extra levels regularly not accessible. Details in spoiler

This game also utilizes StreetPass connections. Thus far, I have gotten a few items from Mushroom houses via other people's StreetPass Miis. This is the extent of StreetPass functionality, as of my completing all the main and extra worlds.

I look forward to rocking the extras detailed in the spoiler. I should have this ready for :kat: rocking by tomorrow. The level design is awesome and impressive. I feel the quality trumps any concerns about conceived length.

I think World 5 is my favorite world, as I recall being Wow'ed when I got there.

PS Vita

PS Vita is looking to come state-side in Jan, as it already hit in Japan. Also of good news, is some Hello World code was run in the VitaPSP mode.

Looking forward to a way to play old UMDs, without being asked to buy them again. Homebrew is also always stupid fun too!

Meanwhile, new users are already reporting issues with system performance. Sony dropped a public apology and FW update, so they knew how it was likely to go down.

SSD Overview and Hunt

I'm looking around at SSDs, since I'd like to run one shortly after I get the new build going. I do know that TRIM support is a requirement, so the drive doesn't go to poor speeds over a fairly rapid time.

Checking out this Intel 520 SSD review, I see some comparable performance drives for about half the price. It also appears that the SandForce controllers are mad nice and fast.

So far, I like the 'Corsair Force Series GT CSSD-F90GBGT-BK 90GB SATA III SSD', as it can be had for about $140. It performs pretty close to the Intel that goes for nearly double, so that is quite my speed.

Hit me up with some infos on your controller and advisement on a drive. :)

New Build Time!

I'm starting the process of a new build. As the recent thread action shows, I picked up a Corsair H60 CPU Cooler. Trying to be cost effective on my build, yet I do lean more toward an Intel i5-2500k Sandy Bridge build.

I'm looking to go with:
  • CPU:
Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge CPU
  • Mobo:
    ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68
  • RAM:
    (Might get 16GB instead) CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)
  • Power Supply:
Corsair TX550W Enthusiast Series Modular PSU

I have some existing hardware I will use for this build. After I have it built up and get some more free loot, I will add a SSD Drive into the mix. SATA 3.0 drive for initial build, since I already have that.

- Items I already have for this build:
  • HDD:
    Seagate Barracuda ES.2 SATA 3.0-Gb/s 500GB
  • Video Card / GPU:
    MSI GeForce 460 GTX Hawk
  • Case:
    Antec P180 Case
  • CPU Cooler:
Corsair Hydro Series H60 CPU Liquid Cooler

I am replacing an Aspire (Apevia) 500W PSU <- Pretty shitty brand with the Corsair unit. My 1.5V ratings have been quite low and the current PSU doesn't like when I add a 3rd SATA HDD. The Aspire works for a buget build PC, but not so well for a rig with a beefier video card or multiple hard drives.

I should have the power supply in the next week, while the other items are pending a good time to order. :bunny:

Cooling Choices

I am officially starting my efforts on building a new PC. So far I have a new Power Supply otw and picked up a Corsair H60 Hydro CPU Cooler. I will be installing this after lunch and will compare it with my current air-cooled solution.

The Combatants:
Thermalright HR-01-775 (air-cooled) -vs- Corsair H60 Hydro cooling kit

As I am looking to build an Intel i5-2500K config, I will test cooling performance on my current Core 2 Duo E6400. The Air-cooled Heatsink is a Thermalright HR-01-775. My temps have actually been very good with the thermalright, but since I was able to get the Corsair H60 Kit local for $60 bucks and would need another cooler when I do the i5 build, I figure now is a great time to see how it fairs against the air-cooled solution.

Most desirable of all for me with water-cooling is a blend between more steady temperatures, less noise and less fans / dust blowing around. Since running a main rig on air, my PC looks like Pigpen from peanuts.

Specs and a Street Fighter Benchmark are attached. This is the Core 2 Duo setup I am testing with. This rig has 4GB of RAM, with 2x2GB sticks installed.

I am about to get started on this test. I will add pictures and more detailed info as I work on this. Shutting down and getting to work, will update from other PC as I progress.
